Benue Speaker Condemns Violent Protests against Suswam

Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Terkimbi Ikyange yesterday condemned the violent protest that took place during a thanks giving service in honour of the former governor of the State, Dr. Gabriel Suswam at NKST Church, Lessel in Ushongo Local Government Area, on Sunday.

Reacting to the news of the protest, Mr. Ikyange wondered why anybody would attack a place of worship with the aim of disrupting a thanksgiving service organised in honour of the immediate past governor of the state for whatever reason.
He stated that no amount of provocation should be used to justify a situation where violence is taken to a place of worship on a sacred day like Sunday and appealed to law enforcement agencies to bring those behind the act to book.

While appealing on youths to channel their grievances to the appropriate quarters for redress, the Ushongo representative distanced himself from the violence saying, those linking him with the unfortunate incident are doing so for political reasons.
Mr. Ikyange noted that as a Christian and one who has respect for elder statesmen, he could not have sponsored the disruption of a thanksgiving service in honour of former Governor Suswam in his Constituency or any part of the State.

According to the Speaker, he has nothing personal against the former governor to warrant him or any of his political associates to sponsor violence against the former Governor and called on the people of the state to disregard the misinformation in its entirety.

Youths in the area alleged to have been hired by one of the APC leaders in Ushongo local government carried placards and protested against what a source informed was a thanksgiving in honour of Suswam whom they alleged squandered the resources of the state while he served as governor for eight years and thus did not deserve to be so honoured.

The youth it was also gathered brought the church service to an abrupt end as worshipers who had throng the service in their numbers scampered for their dear lives.

Immediate past governor, Gabriel Suswam and his predecessor, Samuel Ortom have been at odds since the later instituted a probe into the activities of the former while he served as Governor. The panel report allegedly indicted Suswam and 52 others of defrauding the state to the tune of N107 Billion Naira.

This will be the second time Suswam will be disrupted at a public function in the state. The first took place early this year at the burial of the Paramount Ruler of Ukum Local Government Area HRH. Late Daniel Dzahan.
