'My bestfriend asked me to be her kid's godmother but I found out the dad was my hubby'

Diane Varndell (51) of Colchester in Essex
Big-hearted Diane Varndell’s life has been destroyed by a devastating double deception from two people she loved .
Kind Diane, 51, was a rock when best friend Leanne Priddis, 28, told her she was pregnant by a boyfriend who had dumped her.
The consoling mum-of-two vowed Leanne would not have to bring up the baby alone and started knitting for the tot and saving to deck out a nursery.
True to her word, when little Lexi Grace was born in October last year, Diane babysat and even
looked after the infant overnight. She was delighted when Leanne asked her to be Lexi Grace’s godmother.
But three months later a shocking bombshell dropped. Her god-daughter was, in fact, her cheating husband Wayne’s love child.
Diane said: “I’ve been betrayed by the two most important people in my life. It’s hard to put into words how devastating that is.
“I never saw Leanne as a threat. She told me she thought of me like a mum. We were so close and I thought my marriage was rock solid.”
Diane’s life began to unravel just before Christmas last year when Wayne, 48, suddenly walked out on their six-year marriage. But the depth of his sordid secret only became clear when a mystery phone caller told Diane of his affair with Leanne.

College student Diane said: “I feel so stupid for not seeing the signs. Wayne was always going outside to take phone calls and answer texts.
“But I was gobsmacked when he left. I thought we had a great relationship and we still had a brilliant sex life. Never in a million years did I think he’d been seeing Leanne behind my back. He's old enough to be her dad.”
Wayne and Leanne, both carers, are now in a relationship and live just a few miles from Diane’s home in Colchester, Essex.
Diane, who has two sons, said: “All the time, he knew the baby was his daughter but didn’t say anything. It makes me sick. He played me like a fool. They must’ve had a great laugh behind my back.”
Diane had been single for eight years when she met Wayne in an internet chatroom in 2007. She said: “I wasn’t looking for love but we really hit it off. I invited Wayne round for a coffee and he was charming and kind. Soon, he’d moved in and I couldn’t imagine life without him.”
They married in a low-key ceremony in summer 2008.
Three years later, Diane met Leanne at a psychiatric unit where they were support workers.
Diane said: “She seemed lovely, much younger than me but I felt quite motherly towards her as she hadn’t had an easy childhood.

“I really took her under my wing. She popped round nearly every night, for a cuppa and a chat. Wayne normally left us to it.
“The only time he really spoke to her was when they went outside to smoke. I wonder if they were flirting all along.”
But Diane said her friendship with Leanne could be quite intense.
She said: “We were together most nights. If she didn’t call round, she’d always text or phone. It was a bit much but we got on so well that I didn’t make too much of a fuss. I thought it was sweet how much she looked up to me. I wanted to be there for her.”
In late 2013, Leanne excitedly told Diane she had fallen in love and her new boyfriend had proposed. She wanted Diane to help plan the wedding.
Diane said: “It was a bit strange. I saw her every day but I’d never met her boyfriend. I’d tell her to invite him round but she’d come up with an excuse about how he had to work late.
“When she asked me to go wedding dress shopping with her, I was flattered – but it felt odd, helping her plan her wedding to a man I knew nothing about. I confided in Wayne about my concerns but he didn’t seem too worried. He assured me we’d meet Leanne’s boyfriend soon enough.”
In February last year, Leanne revealed she was expecting a baby with her mystery man but he had left her.

Diane said: “ She told me he’d insisted on an abortion. I felt so sorry for her. It was a heartbreaking situation for a young girl to be in.
“I doubt this man even existed. She looked me in the eye as she told me how distraught she was, yet all the time the baby was my husband’s.
“I genuinely don’t know how they found the time to have an affair. They must have been sleeping together when I popped out to the supermarket. Yet, Wayne still slept beside me every night like nothing was wrong.”
Blissfully unaware of their secret, Diane was thrilled when Leanne asked her and Wayne to be godparents.
She said: “It was a real honour. I was determined to take my role seriously. Leanne found out she was having a girl and I went a bit mad, knitting pink clothes. I also bought her nappies, baby wipes, a bath, and a Moses basket that was worth £200.
“Wayne also seemed pleased he was asked to be godfather. I remember thinking how nice it was that the baby would have a father figure. Now, I feel like an idiot because Wayne actually is her father.”
Wayne kept up the charade when Lexi Grace was born.
Diane said: “Holding her for the first time was emotional. She was such a pretty baby and I felt so proud she was my god-daughter.

“Wayne held her, too, and told Leanne how cute she was. He didn’t seem in any way uncomfortable, although he’d have known the baby was his. It’s sickening.”
And Leanne jumped at the chance when Diane suggested they take her overnight to give the new mum a break. Diane said: “I got up every two hours to feed her, while Wayne slept like a log.”
A few weeks later Wayne texted Diane to say their marriage was not working.
Diane said. “I was gobsmacked, and so hurt he thought it was appropriate to end our marriage by text.
“When he came home an hour later, he could barely look at me.
“He went straight upstairs and started throwing his clothes into a case. As he packed his bags, I was in tears. I begged him to tell me what was wrong and he said he’d simply fallen out of love with me. I was shattered. I asked if there was someone else and I pleaded with him to be honest but he swore blind there wasn’t. I was numb.
“The next few weeks were hell. It was the worst Christmas ever. The only person I wanted to speak to was my mum.”
But Diane’s nightmare was far from over as two months after Wayne walked out, she received the anonymous call as she was cooking dinner.

She said: “Wayne and I were still speaking occasionally and I secretly hoped there might be a way back for us. I still loved him so much and I couldn’t see myself growing old with anyone else.
“But the woman on the line told me they were in a relationship and living together.
“My legs turned to jelly as she added that Lexi Grace was Wayne’s baby. I was shaking so much I had to hang up and I burned my chicken stir-fry.”
Diane tried calling Wayne 50 or 60 times but he did not return her call until the next day.
She said: “When I blurted out what the woman had said I was met with silence. After what seemed like forever, he said what she’d told me was true. I could barely breathe.”
Diane has now sworn off men and faces the agony of seeing her former friend and her husband in the street.
She said: “I refuse to file for divorce. I won’t give them the satisfaction. He can pay for one if he wants one. I saw them in the street and Leanne looked like she wanted the ground to swallow her up.
“I still struggle to understand their betrayal. They’re playing happy families, I wonder if I’ll trust a man again.”
Wayne admitted the affair with Leanne began while he was still with Diane and said: “Lexi Grace is my daughter, yeah but I’m not talking any more because I don’t want anything to do with it.”
